Student Dress Policy 2011-2012
Student Dress Code:
It is the responsibility of the Caddo Parish School Board to provide an educational atmosphere conducive to learning. With this responsibility in mind, the Board adopted a dress code, which meets the following criteria:
· Assures the basic rights of the individuals granted under the Constitution of the United States.
· Is applicable from early childhood education through the completion of high school.
· Meets the requirements and guidelines provided by Title IX.
· Promotes an educational atmosphere conducive to wholesome learning.
The basic responsibility for the appearance of the students of Caddo Parish schools rests with the parents and students themselves. Parents have the obligation, and within certain prescribed bounds, the right to determine their student’s dress. Students are to dress in apparel that is modest, tasteful, and that does not interfere with or distract from the education process or the rights of others. Students and their clothing must be neat, clean, and well groomed and must meet the following guidelines:
· Attire must not be destructive to school property.
· For health reasons, shoes must be worn. Hosiery is required with closed shoes. Flip-flops or sandal shoes with the thong or ring between the toes are not to be worn.
· Only tops designed to be worn outside the pants, shorts, or skirts shall be worn in that manner. Shirts permitted to be worn and not tucked-in include:
a. Shirts with the bottom cut flat or notched that does not extend more than 4 inches from the belt line.
b. Blouses fashioned in a stylish manner that do not extend more than 4 inches from the belt line
The following shirts should be tucked-in:
a. T-shirts
b. Jerseys
c. Shirts with shirt tails
d. Polo-style shirts
e. Any style shirt that extends 4 inches or more below the belt line
· Shirts with buttons and shirt tails worn over a t-shirt should be buttoned and tucked in.
· Pants, shorts, or skirts must be worn at the waist. No “sagging” is permitted. Transparent or breakaway type pants are not permitted. Belts should be buckled at all times.
· Headwear or hair rollers are prohibited in the building. Unnatural hair color (green, blue, etc.) is prohibited.
· Body piercing jewelry cannot be worn except in the ears.
· Shirts, sweaters, jackets, and other tops worn over leggings must be no shorter than four inches from the top of the knee. Skirt length should be no more than four inches from the top of the knee.
· Sunglasses are prohibited in the building unless they are prescribed.
· Bare midriffs, see-through garments, white undergarment type T-shirts, bare backs, halter-tops, tank tops, tube tops, or cutoffs cannot be worn. There are to be no holes or tears in clothing on the school campus.
· The students may wear loose-fitting shorts that are no more than four inches from the top of the knee (front and back) when the student is standing. All shorts must be hemmed. Cutoff shorts, rolled-up jeans, sweats, athletic or spandex shorts cannot be worn. No other article of clothing can be worn beneath shorts for viewing.
· Blouses must cover the midriff when arms are raised.
· Sleeveless blouses, shirts and dresses must extend from the neck to the edge of the shoulder.
· Obscene, profane language or provocative pictures on clothing or jewelry are prohibited.
· Satanic, cult or gang related symbolism in any form is prohibited.
· Drug related symbols in any form, including advertisements or promotion of alcohol or tobacco, are prohibited.
Principals, after consultation with their School Improvement Committee, have the discretion to adjust the dress code to fit unique situations as long as the decision does not interfere with the requirements of Title IX.
